Selfishness and Lower Planes of Existence
Typically, selfishness is viewed as a negative trait that can lead to lower planes of existence. In numerous spiritual traditions, such as those found in Indian scriptures and literature, focusing on others and practicing altruism is regarded as a superior level of existence.
In Hinduism, for instance, liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death is the ultimate objective, not heaven. Selfishness and attachment to material desires are viewed as impediments to reaching this objective.
One of the most important Hindu scriptures, the Bhagavad Gita, teaches that one should perform their duties without attachment to the results of their actions. This is referred to as karma yoga and is regarded as a path to enlightenment.
Buddhism, which also has its origins in India, views selfishness as the source of suffering. By letting go of the ego and practicing compassion and selflessness, one can attain enlightenment and be liberated from suffering, as taught by the Buddha. The practice of generosity (dana) is regarded as an essential Buddhist virtue and a means of cultivating altruism.
According to a study published by the Berkeley Well-Being Institute, those who demonstrated altruism experienced “authentic, durable happiness” whereas those who demonstrated selfishness experienced fluctuating levels of happiness. Similarly, research from Columbia University’s Centre for Sustainable Development suggests that practicing generosity and compassion towards others can result in increased happiness and positive emotions.
Additionally, research indicates that focusing on others can increase contentment and well-being.
A study published in the Journal of Social Psychology, for instance, discovered that conducting acts of kindness for others increased happiness and life satisfaction.
Another study published in the Journal of Positive Psychology discovered that those who practiced gratitude and compassion towards others experienced greater happiness and positive emotions.
Focusing on others and practicing selflessness can lead to higher planes of existence, whereas selfishness can lead to lower planes of existence. Both spiritual traditions and scientific research support this notion.
We can enhance our own well-being and contribute to the well-being of those around us by cultivating altruism and compassion for others.
